Hey guys MisterTeapot here.... stoked about a build competition as building is the primary reason I love this game.
I've been playing for years, and have participated in a number or comps -- either as an organizer competitor or judge, and I gotta admit this seems pretty loosely organized. I don't expect you to change the mechanics of a competition partway through, but for future reference I will add some notes:
- People create better within limits. 18x18 is a start, but I've seen interesting limits like must include Obsidian, must include at least one redstone mechanism things like that. - People grow when they think outside the box. You can easily do this by taking them out of their element. I see a lot of cabin/castle/modern builds on the server, so imposing a theme like Sci-Fi or Tiny House or Pirate ship or Pixel Art can be an interesting way to spice things up. - Judging criteria (and deadlines) need to be very specific. I remember one comp (Cabin in the Woods theme) where I was asking the organizer when the cut-off was (ie 12:00 midnight EST, 12 noon PST) and I mentioned that I was pushing to finish my extensive landscaping. Her remark that "Oh I don't care about landscaping" floored me, as I had already spent 2-3 days terraforming, gardening, planting the perfect trees etc. It really took the wind out of my sails. - Prizes: In almost all competitions I've seen, the three prizes are not place-specific. There are three prizes, with 1st place winner choosing which of the three they'd like. Use your imagination! I've seen things like nearest slime chunk to your base, or my personal favorite a squid in a minecart. (1st place winner inexplicable choose this one)
.... and here's the big one ....
- Competition Area: Pick a nice big chunk of land, create a super claim, and then add subdivisions. Make a warp point from spawn so everyone can easily get to it, and maintain the warps for past competitions. This has the added benefit of being a nice sales pitch for the server -- new users who log on and want to get a feel for the server can easily check out some cool builds and get a sense of the other players design mentalities.
Anyway, that's enough for now -- Good luck to everyone, and keep your eyes on the block!

I think I'll remake the Washington monument.
It's large and phallic, yet non-obscene --- at least until I start ******* the absolute ****** **** ******* *** ***** moist ***** **** pounding of such ****** *** ***** until it's left bloody and winking.
Good luck, chums.
