I recall which point you are talking about and I can understand your suspicion. It may not have appeared to be random, but I can honestly say that it was. 
I had just been back to the entrance to my mine to drop off resources and clear my inventory. I can back to that cave system, went int he opposite direction and mined out some diamonds on the surface, some coal and a bunch of iron. When I came back and when in that direction, I noticed the lava pool blocking another cave spur with some coal and redstone. I had no stone, due to clearing my inventory and having no water bucket, I mined some stone from the opposite wall uncovering those diamonds. If you had continued watching you would have seen me turn around to cover the lava and go into that cave spur.

I can understand your suspicion and why you took this action. You have no reason to believe some random person on the internet. I hope that you listen to what I have said and choose to believe me.
