I've installed a mod that lets me hotkey in and out of "Fullbright" mode, basically constant night-vision. I would assume I can't use this on servers, but is this considered cheating? It seems kinda like a gray area

Client-side mods are client-side. It would work anywhere. And yeah, it's a gray area. I'd say you should use night vision potions instead since it's a SMP server (for crying out loud), but we can't really enforce any rules on stuff like this regardless, especially since you can already see everything properly at 0 light level using the 100% brightness setting as it's not pitch black anywhere.
