i find ore the best way their is, dig down to y/9, then listen for lava. Diamonds are always near lava. Works every time! IT helps i got fire resistance as an enchantment.
also it will make 1 attempt to spawn a set of diamonds in your chunk. so once you find a set, you dig till you find more lava
If you run into dirt/Diorite/Andicite/ or granite, you just go around, Ore dose not spawn inside those chunks.
Also i had a silk touch before i had a fortune pic. so i think some of the problem is, i laid out all my diamond ore in the same spot in my mine. And when i went to pick it all up it kept giving me error codes. saying i hit my limit for now
Advanced tips. diamonds spawn between 1-16, and can be 3 blocks tall, and 4 long. the Y limit will cut off diamond veins, so you avoid 3 blocks above bedrock (y1-6) so avoid y1-9. Same on the top side. Y 16-13. Leaving any full chunk of diamonds between y9 and 13. Aka 4 blocks, with a almost garinteed chance they are 2 blocks deep.
Lave will not cut off diamond veins, stone either. However, the new alt stone types! generate, before ore! and so ore will not spawn in them unless they naturally have a hole. so avoid them.
Only one group of diamonds will be in a chunk, if you don't run into Alt Stone types, or lava at your current location, move on. wast of time, to many blocks to sort through.
You can also do a strip mine as described before, but if you do that you have to start over every time you find a diamond in your chunk,
Another good tip, Go somewhere no-one else is to mine. if you dig in the center of a chunk (16x16=256) down to y9. you have a 3.2% chance to find diamonds. But if you go for an Edge. you have a neatly 20% chance of finding An stone Alternative., You remove the vein of what ever material it is! and any connected ore, and if you don't find diamonds you arnt likely to find any, so you dig till you find a cave or lava. Its hard to say how often this works, but i gota say about 10% of the time it works for me. and i find what im looking for.
TO sum it up, If you cant find diamonds in a chunk easily, you need to move on and take what ore you do find with you, Because their is no point in wasting time on a strip mine, when their are easier diamonds clinging to cave walls, and hiding under lava lakes.
